Tradier Inc. is using a combination of open APIs and a developer sandbox to look for the next cool idea for trading and financial services. The company’s no-charge Developer Sandbox aims to give devs “friction-less” access to trading services and market data, and eliminate barriers such as cost and complexity.

“Developers are constantly looking for environments to develop and incubate their ideas. The industry lacks a product that addresses this gap,” said Steve Agalloco, Tradier’s co-founder and vice president engineering in a statement.

Aside from no-charge access, devs using Tradier’s Developer Sandbox will get these features:

  • Watchlists: To let users keep track of their interests. You can create, update, and delete watchlists and all items within them.
  • Streaming Events: Live feeds-based updates on orders or general market data. Devs receive REST-based access to delayed market data.
  • Trading: Ability to execute simple and complex orders via a simple interface. Dev can avoid complex XML using form parameters
  • Market Data: Market data delivered through HTTP request/response. This includes equity and option quotes, chains, expirations, strikes, and tick-based time and sales.
  • Historical Data: Historical data is available, with tick-by-tick data metrics for the prior five trading days.
  • Over the next couple months, Tradier will be adding paper trading, virtual accounts, and streaming, he added.

Another Tradier co-founder, Jason Barry, described the initiative this way in his blog:

Observing this pattern over the last 2 years, we felt it was time we addressed these problems faced by new and existing companies, on their path to building their businesses. We founded Tradier with the ambitious goal of enabling greater innovation in financial services. Furthering that initiative, we are excited about the launch of the Tradier Developer Sandbox.

Notably, Tradier’s Developer Sandbox also ensures devs a smooth transition from their dev/test phase to a fully-functioning live app, he added.
