bigdata_02Open Source BI vendor Actuate Corp. is partnering with VMware on a big data solution for hybrid cloud environments.  ActuateOne speeds up the deployments of popular VMware solutions because it eliminates the need for hard-coded configuration in public, private and SaaS (software-as-a-service) clouds.

With ActuateOne, VMware  customers can more securely and efficiently extract actionable insights from their data, as well as analyze and visualize big data that resides across hybrid cloud environments. ActuateOne is based on the open source business intelligence and reporting tools project (BIRT).

ActuateOne works with VMware vFabric Data Director and VMware vFabric Postgres.

VMware vFabric Data Director is a unified virtualization platform for managing the lifecycle of heterogeneous databases, enabling users to accelerate database virtualization and provide (DaaS) database as a service in cloud environments. The software automates deployment, management and governance of thousands of databases and enables policy-based self-service database management for application developers. vFabric Data Director currently supports Oracle 10gR2, 11gR2; and vFabric Postgres 9.0, 9.1, a VMware optimized relational database based on PostgreSQL.

VMware vFabric Postgres is an optimized PostgreSQL database for virtual environments. It delivers greater agility and efficiency benefits at the database tier through optimizations for vSphere and vFabric. VMware vPostgres is an enterprise-class ANSI SQL relational database optimized for vSphere and vFabric environments. vPostgres is fully compatible with the proven, open source PostgreSQL. vPostgres allows you to significantly lower your database TCO and increase agility within your virtual environments.

“Actuate’s technology scales linearly across any number of virtual instances, interfacing well with VMware solutions, and further delivering on the Actuate promise of better insights for better decision making by more people in the organization,” said Wenfeng Li, Vice President of Product Development at Actuate, in a statement.

Also on the BIRT front, Actuate is shipping BIRT iHub, a deployment framework for delivering apps that keep end users up to date on the insights they need to run their businesses – wherever they are.

BIRT iHub lets organizations access and combine heterogeneous data sources, including big data, cloud and social media so they can better understand their businesses, company officials said. It also enables enterprises to access information on mobile devices, such as tablets and smartphones.

“With the BIRT iHub, ActuateOne becomes even better equipped to deploy any application that delivers insight derived from Big Data - all the way to touch devices,” said Pete Cittadini, CEO and President, Actuate Corp., in a statement. The Actuate iHub is the obvious next step in the continuing evolution of ActuateOne scalable BI product, he added.

iHub supports traditional big data sources,  as well as the ability to process and present cloud and social media and even machine-generated data. iHub is designed to apply available predictive analytics to forecast where that business is headed and make appropriate decisions. The ability to take advantage of iHub’s flexible virtualization feature allows organizations to scale and contract their applications as appropriate in public/private/hybrid clouds and via SaaS and PaaS environments, Cittadini added.

iHub also lets organizations access any big data source without adding costs of warehouses or other data architectures. ActuateOne solutions based on the BIRT iHub address many business cases, including Customer Communications Management and Performance Analytics. BIRT iHub also offers “self-service” information applications to allow non-technical users to access and manage metrics that minimize risk, control costs and speed success.
