Micro Focus is offering a free personal edition of its team-oriented dev environment for mainframe projects. The company’s Enterprise Developer Personal Edition aims to reduce the skills gap between COBOL, Java and C# devs with a simple, entry-level version of Micro Focus’ Enterprise Developer team suite..
The personal edition, available for the Eclipse or Visual Studio IDE, looks to boost the agility of developers who perform day-to-day mainframe development activities and address the mainframe skills shortage by reducing the gap between COBOL, Java and C# developers in a collaborative IDE environment, according to Micro Focus product marketing director Julia Ito.
The personal edition comes with smart COBOL editing, data file editor, BMS screen painter, syntax checking and compilation to create a simple way to modernize, develop and maintain mainframe applications, Ito said.
“Developers can make use of all these features for free, instantly. . . becoming more effective by having access to the latest technologies and reduction in dependency on mainframe resources,” she said. “Once the code has been verified, it can be uploaded back to the mainframe as part of the final integrated test or unit test.”

When asked if the personal edition will be available from the cloud, Ito said, “Micro Focus has a long-term strategy that includes the availability of mainframe development-as-a-service on the cloud. Alternatively, Micro Focus Visual Cobol and Micro Focus Enterprise Server are already available for Windows Azure cloud.”
Micro Focus Enterprise Developer Personal Edition is the entry-level development platform of the Micro Focus Mainframe Solution – a comprehensive product suite to help organizations through the journey of delivering mainframe workload.
While Micro Focus’ new personal edition may help with the ramp up of new mainframe devs, it may not fill all the needs of the full mainframe apps lifecycle.
In specific, Ito noted, “Enterprise Developer Personal Edition does not offer execution and unit testing capabilities. Users need the full Micro Focus Enterprise Developer Team Edition to run with configuration management environments to run a full suite of testing.”
Ito added that the Team Edition can be switched on from the Personal Edition, where users can evaluate the full functionality for 30 days.
