Oracle GoldenGate Adds Deeper Oracle Integration, Extends Real-Time Performance

The latest upgrade to Oracle GoldenGate 11g sports increased integration with Oracle’s database, applications, Exadata and  Enterprise Manager to let customers access and share enterprise data more quickly and reliably. Oracle GoldenGate 11g  Release 2 also supports non-Oracle databases, including DB2, PostgreSQL and Microsoft SQL.

Oracle GoldenGate 11g  Release 2 also supports non-Oracle databases, including DB2, PostgreSQL and Microsoft SQL.

Because Oracle GoldenGate 11g R2 now directly integrates with Oracle’s database engine, its change data capture (CDC) capability can read data changes in real-time directly from the database and tables, Oracle’s Brad Adelberg, vice president of development, told IDN. Prior versions supported CDC by accessing the database redo logs.

The enhanced automated CDC features mean simpler and more powerful ways for customers to reduce the time required to detect and resolve data conflicts by automating the process across multiple deployments, Adelberg said. The latest version  also can perform CDC using compressed tables, thanks to support for Oracle Advanced Compression, he added.

Oracle GoldenGate 11g  R2 also offers “zero downtime” for database migration from departmental datastores, to data warehouses and Exadata. “Our zero downtime supports disaster recovery for data, and will also safeguards a company’s transformation logic,” Adelberg added. 

Adelberg also highlited several use case benefits to the Oracle Goldegate update.

BI, analytics and other operational reporting use cases. “Users will see a dramatic increase in performance, and access to their data,” Adelberg told IDN. As an example, GoldenGate’s ODI to do change data capture from the data store to a data warehouse in as little as minutes – rather than overnight, he added.

Monitoring and management also gets a boost. The latest Oracle GoldenGate edition  offers an optional plug-in to Oracle Enterprise Manager, Adelberg said. “This plug-in presents a consolidated view of the details of Oracle GoldenGate instances, directly from the Oracle Enterprise Manager console,” he said.  It also will measure and graph key metrics, and provide IT automated notifications and ticket creations. 

Support for SaaS/cloud users and providers. “We see a lot of interest in using Oracle GoldenGate within the infrastructure of SaaS vendors, and it has become key technology,” Adelberg said. He also said that enhanced CDC support as well capabilities to monitor and diagnose SLAs are addressing cloud/SaaS needs.

Distributed data environments benefit from Oracle Goldengate 11g R2’s supports for multi-master environments, Adelberg added. This lets users support multiple database systems or partitioned databases and simplify the ability to eliminate conflicts between them. “You can have those separate databases act like a single database and route those changes to each other.”

Beyond its ability to simplify conflict detection and resolution for data, Oracle GoldenGate also supplies conflict detection and resolution for logic using pre-configured ways (with little or no coding) to let users specify the logic they use to handle multiple updates to the same record, (e.g. the “last writer wins” approach, among others). “The idea to let companies spend their time focused on their business problem – not on the logic,” Adelberg said

For security requirements, the update also supports FIPS (Federal Information Protection Standard) algorithms for encrypting data in transit, required by many government users.


Non-Oracle environments also get benefits. Those users gain support for capture from, and delivery to, IBM DB2 on iSeries, as well as enhanced support for MySQL, PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server, Sybase, Teradata, and IBM DB2 z/OS.
