dev_testing01International Data Corp. (IDC) estimates that cloud and mobility applications will help propel worldwide testing services to an eye-popping 15.4 percent annual growth rate through 2015. IDC estimated spending on testing services hit $9.4 billion for 2010.

IDC research also found that while the U.S. has led the world is testing services spending for both traditional and cloud-based solutions, other all parts of the world are catching up, including Canada, Latin America, Western Europe, and parts of Asia/Pacific.

Internal IT or R&D engineering teams will increasingly look to leverage private and/or public cloud dev/test environments to improve efficiencies of operations, according to Rona Shuchat, director of IDC’s Application Outsourcing Services. In additional, they will also seek out third parties for a wide range of test-related services, including strategy planning, automating integrated test frameworks, and to accelerate test cycles, Shuchat added.

"The pressure to validate an increasingly complex set of testing requirements across different applications architectures and interfaces (e.g. SOA/cloud/mobile), multiple mobile OSs, form factors, and network technology layers is expected to tax most customers," Shuchat said in a statement.

IDC’s other key findings include:

  • Smartphones and tablets will redefine enterprise working methods and customer service approaches.  Following this, the need to validate mobile applications for B2B, B2C, and B2E usage and performance will grow through at least 2015.
  • Software usability end user satisfaction will become “more critical components” which will influence the adoption of testing services over the period.
  • Companies will turn to project-based or fully outsourced testing services to support application testing or product engineering testing requirements.

IDC’s study Worldwide and U.S. Discrete Testing Services 2011–2015 Forecast: Cloud and Mobility Will Drive Next Phase of Evolution (IDC #228202) provides a sizing of the independent global testing services market. The report focuses on discrete enterprise application testing and product engineering testing services, and includes total worldwide market breakouts for the Americas, EMEA, and Asia/Pacific.
