identity_managementBMC Software will use governance-driven identity management solutions from SailPoint Technologies for its Business Service Management (BSM) portfolio for managing physical, virtual and cloud data centers and infrastructures.

The partnership will bring SailPoint’s identity management software to BMC Identity Management, (formerly Control-SA) for scalable and reliable provisioning infrastructures, according to the companies.  The deal also reflects changes coming to infrastructure identity management, as virtualized and cloud options become more popular.

BMC’s Rohit Gupta, general manager and vice president for Service Support, said in a statement. “Today’s identity management challenges are complex and are driven primarily by compliance and governance needs.”

Meanwhile, a Garter senior analyst, Ian Glazer, said customers want to address more “business-centric” identity management requirements.  The BMC/SailPoint partnership “sets the stage for more business-driven identity management that better meets today’s visibility and transparency needs,” Glazer said in a statement.

BMC’s BSM customers will receive the following capabilities from the SailPoint partnership:

  • Identity governance for compliance requirements and managing identity risks across the IT environment;
  • Identity intelligence features to give enterprises insight into the business so they can strengthen IT controls and reduce risk (including dashboards, ad hoc query, and personalized reporting);
  • Business-friendly UIs to facilitate line-of-business participation in identity management processes (such as access request, access review, approvals, policy enforcement, and audits);
  • Next-generation provisioning to simplify the request and approval of access privileges; and
  • Customer-friendly migration plans to eliminate “rip and replace” technologies.

SailPoint products now part of the BMC BSM platform will include SailPoint IdentityI Compliance Manager and SailPoint IdentityIQ Lifecycle Manager.  SailPoint IdentityIQ integrates seamlessly with the BMC Identity Management and Remedy products.

SailPoint IdentityIQ will provide identity governance to BMC’s Remedy self-service, help desk, change management and asset management solutions, and aligns identity management processes with other IT services.

Inside SailPoint’s Unified Governance Approach
The SailPoint approach to identity management offers a unified governance-based architecture, which can better align business and IT management requirements at lower cost.

The approach, according to SailPoint, provides:

  • Unified processes and controls by automating all key identity business processes to ensure consistent controls and auditability.
  • Business and IT alignment by making it easier to involve business users in all identity management processes, (access requests, approvals, certifications, policy definition, etc.)

A SailPoint document describes its approach this way:

Unlike traditional approaches to identity management which treat governance, compliance, and provisioning as separate activities, often spread across multiple, disjointed products, [SailPoint] IdentityIQ provides a unified approach leveraging a common identity governance framework to consistently apply business and security policy, role and risk models across all access-related activities.

SailPoint’s products focus on compliance, identity intelligence, role management, business policy, and business process management with a “last mile” vendor-agnostic approach that will fully leverage BMC’s connector infrastructure and provide additive capabilities to complement the functionality of BMC Identity Management.

Follows BMC’s Cloud-Ready Proactive Operations
News of the BMC/SailPoint partnership follows BMC’s announcement in December of a cloud-ready Proactive Operations solution based on BSM for enterprise data centers.  That roll out aimed at enabling IT to be more responsive to business demands at lower expense with Proactive IT Operations management that can tie together planning, predictive analytics and preventative automation.

BMC’s Proactive Operations solution allows IT to simplify the monitoring and management of their data center with a single Proactive Operations platform, combining performance, availability, event and impact management of physical, virtual and cloud environments.

Using predictive and service impact analytics, the solution accelerates problem isolation and delivers early, fast and intelligent problem detection, prioritization and resolution.  Business-aware capacity optimization can also leverage performance and configuration data within the BSM platform to extend BMC’s ability to support cloud planning as well as continuous capacity optimization in dynamic virtual and cloud environments, the company added.
