Open Source integration provider WSO2 is shipping a business rules server aimed at letting companies quickly and easily create, access, and manage business rules within an SOA framework.
WSO2 Business Rules Server (BRS) delivers a tool for separating business logic from underlying infrastructure code. The goal is to make it easier for devs and architects to make an organization’s rules more manageable, governance and easier to change / update, using SOA practices, said Sanjiva Weerawarana, founder and CEO of WSO2, in a statement.
WSO2 BRS is the latest addition to WSO2 Carbon, the company’s open source middleware platform. Adding rule functionality was an important next step for helping architects and integration developers address business needs, Weerawarana added.
“Rules are becoming an increasingly popular part of the enterprise application toolbox, and a vital part of realizing the promises of agility and efficiency of service-oriented architectures,” Weerawarana said. “With the addition of the WSO2 Business Rules Server to our WSO2 Carbon platform, IT and business users can work even more effectively together to build and maintain competitive advantage in their industries.”
WSO2 BRS brings IT and business users working with SOA the ability to:
- Incorporate rule-based logic into workflows run by the WSO2 Business Process Server (WSO2 BPS).
- Use rule-based message mediation within the WSO2 Enterprise Service Bus (WSO2 ESB).
- Enhance a governance scheme with rules using the WSO2 Governance Registry.
- Target and filter alerts within the WSO2 Business Activity Monitor (BAM) using rules.
- Implement Web services merely by using a rule set.

For business analysts, WSO2 BRS will summarize business rules in more accessible forms to ensure they accurately reflect the needs of the business, according to the company.
The WSO2 Business Rules Server is available today as a software download from the WSO2 website. It is also available as a WSO2 Cloud Virtual Machine running on either the Amazon Elastic Computing Cloud (EC2) or VMware ESX.
Later this year, it will be offered as service running within the WSO2 Stratos platform-as-a-service. As a fully open source solution released under the Apache License 2.0, WSO2 BRS does not carry any licensing fees. WSO2 offers a range of additional service and support options, including evaluation support, the QuickStart consulting program, development support, and production support.
WSO2 BRS is based on the open source Drools business rules management system (BRMS), so Drools developers have a simple and clear-cut way to integrate rules with their SOA implementations, according to company officials.
