An unnamed energy supplier's decision to rehost its mainframe applications is bringing benefits on several fronts, as within eight months the firm cut software license fees and simplified on-going operations – all without disrupting access to its critical business logic.
The mainframe rehosting project for the unnamed energy firm was completed under a contract with Clerity Inc., which provides Clerity UniKix Rehosting mainframe migration, modernization, and optimization solutions The firm moved its energy metering and billing application from Natural, Adabas, Predict and EntireX mainframe environments to Clarity’s UniKix platform, according to a Clerity executive.
“Clerity’s comprehensive mainframe [modernization] …solutions add value to organizations by optimizing their existing legacy investments, enabling new business management initiatives and lowering annual operational costs by as much as 70 percent,” said Cameron Jenkins, COO of Clerity, in a statement.
The energy firm’s mainframe rehosting project included these components:
- The online mainframe Natural environment was moved to an interactive Natural environment on UNIX.
- Batch Natural programs and JCL were rehosted to Natural and JCL on the new system to be executed by UniKix Batch Processing Environment (BPE) software
- Adabas, Generation Data Groups (GDGs) and sequential files were moved to Adabas, GDGs (supported through UniKix BPE) and sequential files on the new target system.
- Simplification of mainframe operations by replacing or removing proprietary components with open systems options (i.e. Advanced Function Printing, Document Composition Functionality, print management features, etc.)
Inside Clerity UniKix Rehosting
Clerity UniKix Rehosting technologies can offer mainframe users a suite of options to meet various needs to reduce costs, loads or complexity, including:
UniKix Transaction Processing Environment (TPE), which provides a native, high-performance TP software environment for open systems platforms that manages application-based resources such as programs, files, queues, transactions, screens, and terminals.
UniKix Batch Processing Environment (BPE), which provides a middleware framework for administering, executing, and managing MVS and VSE batch workloads and third-party system management software components on open environments.
UniKix Manager, software to allow users to view and monitor UniKix TPE system events from any system on the network. It also provides centralized, real-time information for determining system status, processing rates, potential bottlenecks, and configuration enhancements.
UniKix Secure, software which provides role-based access control to secure operations.
