IBM has established a big data analytics unit based on its Jeopardy-winning supercomputer Watson to develop cloud-based products and services for enterprises. The IBM Watson Group is a new business unit that will bring software, services and apps to market that can uncover answers to complex questions by analyzing massive amounts of data.

Dubbed the IBM Watson Group, the new business unit will bring to market commercial software, services and apps that think, improve by learning and discover answers to complex questions by analyzing massive amounts of big data, according to company officials.

Michael Rhodin, senior vice president of IBM's software solutions group, will head up the new unit, which will have 2,000 employees and be based in New York City

The headquarters will include a client solutions center where IBM clients can experience cognitive technologies and learn how they can help transform their businesses. In addition, the headquarters will host a design lab that will work on advancing user experiences for cognitive apps and services used by IBM clients and partners.

Beyond launching the IBM Watson Group, IBM also announced three new services based on Watson’s ‘cognitive intelligence’ technology. They are:

  • IBM Watson Discovery Advisor.  This aims to change the way industries such as pharmaceutical and publishing conduct research. The Watson Discovery Advisor will analyze the massive amounts of data researchers face, and uncover connections that can speed up and strengthen their work.
  • IBM Watson Analytics. This produces visual representations of big data insights for researchers without the need for advanced analytics training. The service lets business users quickly uncover new insights in their data. Watson Analytics automatically prepares the data, uncovers the most important relationships and presents the results in an easy-to-understand interactive visual format.
  • IBM Watson Explorer. This aims to speed the launch of big data projects, as well as give enterprise users a unified view of their data to better uncover and share insights more easily. It provides a framework for developing data-rich apps that will provide a comprehensive and contextually-relevant view.

IBM will invest more than $1 billion into the Watson Group, including $100 million in venture funding for businesses that develop apps based on cognitive apps powered by Watson, in the IBM Watson Developers Cloud, according to Rhodin.

“IBM has transformed Watson from a quiz-show winner, into a commercial cognitive computing breakthrough that is helping businesses engage customers, healthcare organizations personalize patient care, and entrepreneurs build businesses,” Rhodin said in a statement.

According to IBM, Watson is 24 times faster and 90% smaller than it was in its Jeopardy quiz show days. This means that Watson from the size of a master bedroom to three stacked pizza boxes, according to big Blue.

As part of its initiative to speed the delivery of cognitive innovations to organizations via the cloud, IBM also revealed it will deploy Watson on Softlayer, the cloud computing infrastructure IBM acquired last year, Rhodin added.
