3scale is fueling the API Economy in two ways this month. It is rolling out an educational resource portal to help both devs and business folks learn more about APIs. It also picked 10 API firms to participate in StartupBus, an entrepreneur-focused project to fuel startups.

3scale’s dev portal for APIs, API Codex is now in beta, and is designed to provide information to devs on how to create and manage APIs. It also will offer business managers insight on the best ways to leverage APIs to expand business opportunities. The portal will also let participants share with the community.

3scale CEO Steve Willmott explained the company’s commitment to API education for both technical and business stakeholders. “APIs have the potential to generate huge benefits across many industries, and as a company we see it as a big part of our mission to help individuals and organizations unlock these benefits,” Willmott said in a statement.

As a vendor-neutral site, API Codex will present best practices along with technical, academic and business oriented material on using private and public APIs as a way to access openly available apps, data and emerging cloud services, according to a list of API Condex resources.

At present, the portal offers information on how to build and manage APIs, steps to a successful API strategy, a library of curated links and tips and commentary, according to 3scale’s API evangelist Kirsten Jones. “The technology and business opportunities APIs present are many, and the market opportunity high. But even though the overall value for developers and business is clear, it’s early stage and development around APIs can be tricky,” Jones said in the statement.

Among the tools explored at API Codex are: API Blueprint; Fiddler; Foauth; HAPI Server Framework; HTTPScoop; Httpbin; Hurl.it; JSON Generator and JSON Stub.   3scale is also committed to open community initiatives, such as API Commons, Jones added.

Award-Winning APIs To Join 3scale On StartupBus
Last week, 3scale also announced the winners of its API contest, which will be presented to ride the StartupBus buses. The StartupBus program aims to bring together start-up minded entrepreneurs and devs to work together to create a startup in only 72 hours.

3scale selected these API companies to leverage StartupBus to further seed the API Economy:

Bistri offers an API that can reimage how video calls are made. It works from web and mobile devices to integrate video calls and conferences with data channels. The API lets devs integrate the package into business applications.

Bitcasa has a REST API that offers access to a secure, virtual 1TB hard drive in the cloud. The Bitcasa plug-and-play filesystem works with mobile, web, and desktop apps, and makes storage and devices fully independent from one another.

Evercam aims to make camera and video integration easier. The API lets devs integrate a range of apps with more 1,600 IP cameras, DVRs and NVRs.

FullContact uses APIs to enrich contact information. As an example, it can take unique identifier information, such as email, and add name, job title, and social media profiles to that “stub” of information. It provides the full information set in XML, JSON, or vCard format.

The Kairos API gives devs an easy-to-consume two-call facial recognition API. It can enroll new people and recognize people in submitted images. On its roadmap, it has plans to add abilities to detect gender, age, race, and even the capability to find faces in video.

The Kii Cloud REST API provides devs access to an instant, scalable mobile backend for apps – without writing any server code. Mobile app devs get user management and authentication (via Facebook credentials); data management with any schema; file storage and cloud backup; push notification and geolocation.

Nutritionix uses an API to let devs enrich their apps by adding nutrition data from over 100,000 foods and thousands of restaurants and grocery stores. Devs can let users find nutrition info on restaurant menu items, browse info from pre-packaged foods from more than 1500 manufacturers and more.

The Trippin’in API looks to make it easy to find the cool hangouts. It has an algorithm that uses big data approaches to monitor the “social pulse” of the local scene.

UNData API is the unofficial API to public great data made available by the United Nations. The UNData REST API is hosted on Heroku’s MongoHQ and makes more than 100 UNDATA datasets (primarily from the World Health Organization) queryable from any application. The UN plans to add more datasets.

Zeebox, an innovator in social TV, now offers devs (not just partners) instant access to their APIs that power Zeebox platform. Mobile and web apps devs can integrate Zeebox's guides, social networking and tagging into their projects.
