Dell’s latest cloud services aim to provide IT some innovative options for ways to adopt an enterprise-class private cloud – without the cost and complexity of hosting and managing it themselves.

Dell’s updates focus assuring SLAs and security -- two crucial feature sets for enterprise customers that worry about using when, how and how much to use private clouds for mission-critical apps.  “Business continuity, security and compliance are consistently at the top of our customers’ priorities for their private cloud infrastructures,” said Jeremy Ford, executive director, cloud services for Dell Services, in a statement.

The Dell Cloud Onsite Service provides on-premise managed cloud services within a customer’s data center with full management and support. Key enterprise-class features of the Dell Cloud Onsite Service include:

  • Active Systems and OpenStack solutions. Provide reference architectures to suit Windows and Linux workload evolution from virtualized to cloud environments
  • Remote infrastructure management. Optimized to let IT offload routine IT administration tasks.
  • Customizable SLA. Allows IT or business stakeholders to configure clouds to meet unique service level agreement requirements
  • SecureWorks monitoring. This optional add-on provides comprehensive security above and below the hypervisor

The Dell Cloud Dedicated Service is a VMware-based infrastructure-as-a-service,, hosted architected with new features to help IT ensure that virtual workloads, data or applications meet privacy or compliance requirements that can’t be met with public clouds. Key upgrades include:

  • SLA compliance to 99.95%,  to ensure customers receive service infrastructure availability for any calendar month
  • Data protection via seven-day rolling snapshots, local backup and recovery, and offsite disaster recovery
  • Bundled IT data-center services, leveraging server collocation, OS and applications management and support, and networking
  • Environmental controls aligned with HIPAA and HITECH Act privacy

As to PCI, the Dell Cloud Dedicated Service is now compliant with PCI DSS 2.0 Level 1 to make it easier for organizations to securely host sensitive data, such as payment card data. It also offers add-on security services for PCI scanning, threat assessment, vulnerability management and web application level scanning. This high degree of PCI compliance also means that merchants, banks and organizations that transmit, store and process credit cards have to ensure that data is secure or face financial fines, according to Ford.

Dell Cloud Dedicated Service adds disaster recovery support for the full application to avoid downtime.

Dell supports remote management for both the on-premise Dell Cloud Onsite Service and the Dell OpenStack-Powered Cloud Solution allow full support from Dell at the infrastructure layer.
