cloud2012More companies will adopt cloud development practices in 2012 as IT organizations build and deploy software in the cloud, according to CollabNet, a provider of cloud development and agile application management (ALM) products and services.

Just as agile processes are scaling across IT, these same organizations are also adopting and scaling software development and deployment directly in the cloud, according to Guy Marion, vice president of CollabNet’s cloud services.

For evidence, CollabNet points to its own adoption metrics. During 2011, CollabNet reports an eye-popping  40% increase in projects developed, deployed and hosted on the company’s private and public cloud offerings. Further, more than 1,500 new customers adopted the company’s Codesion cloud development platform over the past 12 months, according to company statistics released this month.

“The software development industry continues to evolve at a rapid pace, and we see the convergence of agile ALM, continuous delivery and hybrid cloud strategies making enterprise-wide cloud development practices increasingly attractive to IT organizations,” said Bill Portelli, CollabNet’s CEO and co-founder in a statement.

ColabNet says these factors are setting the stage for a next wave of software ALM, cloud and deployment models:

  • Maturing cloud development platforms that provide enterprise-grade security and regulatory compliance
  • Ability to integrate commercial and open source ALM tools in the cloud
  • Increase in cloud-based “continuous delivery” capabilities
  • Expansion of hybrid computing strategies blending public and private cloud platforms.

CollabNet’s cloud platforms enable developers to streamline the development and deployment process using a growing ecosystem of hosted open source and commercial tools, including Apache Subversion, Git, Trac, Bugzilla, CollabNet’s agile ALM platform TeamForge, and other leading agile project management tools.
