Because more people are reporting claims via their mobile devices, Travelers developed its “Auto Accident Help” mobile application for Android, iPhone and BlackBerry smartphone users. It lets users create an accident report and send in their claim, according to  Jay Gauthier, Vice President, Travelers Personal Insurance Marketing.

According to the study, 70% of claims filed through mobile devices related to personal auto insurance; 28% were personal insurance property claims; and 2% were business insurance property claims (.5%) and business insurance auto claims (1.5%).

A related study by Nielsen found 36% of U.S. mobile phone consumers now have smartphones: 68% of iPhone users, 60% of people with Android devices and 45% of those with Blackberry/RIM smartphones reported using their mobile apps numerous times a day.

Among the features, the Travelers mobile app:

  • Guides customers through the steps they need to take as to document the accident and submit a claim
  • Automatically detects the accident date, time and location
  • Allows those in an accident to photograph damage and record an audio description
  • Helps customers collect information from drivers, passengers, witnesses, and police
  • Provides easy access to roadside assistance, repair shops and other auto-related phone numbers
  • Produces a detailed accident report with attached photos, voice recordings, and contact information
