Jaspersoft is opening up the world of BI to millions of Java developers with the release of a complete BI open source environment for Eclipse. Jaspersoft Studio allows Eclipse devs to build, secure, and share BI reports for free.
With Jaspersoft Studio, developers can build, share, and manage reports for free in the most popular Java development environment, according to Guilio Toffoli, Founder and Lead Architect of Jaspersoft’s iReport.
Jaspersoft Studio aims to bring two large dev communities together to promote open source BI, Toffoli noted. Eclipse remains one of Java’s largest communities, averaging some one million downloads every month. Jaspersoft operates the largest open source BI community with over 225,000 registered members.
Jaspersoft Studio for Eclipse is available for free download at JasperForge.org.
Jaspersoft Studio extends Eclipse’s current reporting tool capabilities for building, sharing, and management. Users can design and distribute reports accessing any data source including relational databases, “big data” and NoSQL databases, or flat files, Toffoli said. It also allows devs to build reports in Jaspersoft Studio and share reports with users of Jaspersoft’s open source JasperReports Server project, he added.
“With the provided Eclipse reporting tools, developers can get started with report design fairly quickly, but the runway of what they can do is short,” Toffoli said in a statement. “Jaspersoft Studio is designed to create a richer BI experience for the Eclipse community. Now, when a developer wants to deploy or secure a BI report, they can do it with our server without requiring a costly commercial license.”
Eclipse execs also support the Jaspersoft move to beef up its BI and reporting capabilities. Mike Milinkovich, Executive Director of the Eclipse Foundation said “The Eclipse community gets stronger with each new member who contributes innovative and functional software.. We look forward to new [Jaspersoft] tools and the expertise they can add in the business intelligence arena."
Jaspersoft also joined the Eclipse Foundation, and has extended its open software development arm and ability to build open source applications and products.
“Combining the strengths of Jaspersoft and Eclipse yields new advantages for open source business intelligence, ultimately giving a broader set of customers the tools needed to improve decision-making,” Brian Gentile, CEO at Jaspersoft said in a statement.
