Managed solutions, cloud and complex event process (CEP) are top candidates, according to a Bloomberg survey of IT heavyweights.  The poll was taken at Bloomberg LINK's first Enterprise Technology Summit, an invitation-only seminar of 100+ CIOs and other IT decision-makers from major financial services firms.

IT execs were asked about their planned levels of spending, and what they would spend it on: Among the results:

Compliance  Not surprisingly, given the lingering economic situation and anticipated new regulation, a whopping 84 % of respondents told researchers they have increased spending on regulatory and compliance systems in the past two years.  But, there are signs that spending in this area may finally be giving way to other priorities, as 11% said spending remained constant over the period, and 5% actually said they have decreased spending on compliance-related issues.

Overall IT Spending More than three-fourths (76%) said they expect to increase IT spending in the next 12 months. Notably, one 17 % said they will decrease IT spending.

Managed Solutions More than half (55%) said they are shifting more of their overall capital expense to managed solutions. One-third (33%) said they were not making such a shift, and 12 % said they still are unsure.

Cloud Solutions  Almost half (45%) noted cloud as a top area where “infrastructure investment [has] yielded the most return on investment (ROI) in the last year.”

Low latency Trading One-third (33%) mentioned low-latency trading investments as showing the most ROI.

Complex Event processing (CEP) Less than one-quarter (23%) said CEP was a top ROI performer.

The survey follows word that Bloomberg is expanding into enterprise technology services market. "Our customers are facing increasing pressure on returns, so we are using our expertise, products and new partnerships to help them lower costs and improve their IT infrastructure's efficiency and effectiveness," said Shawn Edwards, Bloomberg CTO in a statement.
