Survey: Virtualization, Cloud Pose Backup and Recovery Challenges

Most IT professionals at small and mid-sized firms want a single backup and recovery solution across all environments -- physical, virtual and cloud, according to a recent survey.
The survey, called the Global Disaster Recovery Index , measures the confidence of IT managers at small and mid-sized companies in their backup and recovery operations. The survey was by conducted last fall by the Ponemon Institute and released in January by Acronis, a provider of backup and recovery solutions.
To gather the information, the Ponemon Institute surveyed some 3,000 IT managers worldwide also shows IT is concerned about keeping data safe and backed up in these ‘hybrid’ environments
These are among the top findings in the survey of IT managers:
- A large majority (68%) say their “greatest challenge” in a hybrid environment comprised of physical, virtual and cloud resources is moving data between the three environments.
- The average business today uses two or three separate backup solutions, which can make disaster recovery more complicated.
- More than half (62%) say they are concerned about their ability to “avoid substantial downtime,” in the event of a serious incident.
- Some 40% say they are “confident” they could recover systems quickly.
- Approximately 38% say their IT staffs are qualified to handle disaster recovery operations in response to an event or disaster.
- About one third of SMB and mid-sized companies in the U.S. said they didn’t have any backup and DR strategy in place, mainly because they didn’t have appropriate budget or staff resources to get it done
