IBM’s Innovate 2010 conference will provide enterprise architects and devs a wide array of opportunities to improve their enterprise modernization strategies for System z, including a host of new ways to collaborate with other Java, .NET and web developer colleagues. Innovate 2010 will be held in Orlando Fla, June 6 – 10.

Innovate 2010 will also debut a new set of programs aimed to bring together System z professionals with those using Rational, Power System and other IBM technologies, said Hayden Lindsey, an IBM Distinguished Engineer and Vice President in Rational’s Enterprise Modernization Group.

Inside System z Content at Innovate 2010
As System z assets get integrated and shared with other regions of the enterprise, Enterprise Modernization, Hayden told IDN that enterprise modernization projects are “taking on a holistic [approach] to application development.”

(June 6-10 – Orlando, Fla.)

“These days, most enterprises are doing multi-platform application development, where some portions are developed to deploy on System z and others to deploy on distributive platforms inside the browser,” Lindsey said.  This evolution, where System z modernization, embraces so many other enterprise resources (and skilled staff), has driven IBM to make some notable additions to its System z program at Innovate, Lindsey added.

At Innovate 2010, “we now break down [our System z] into four sections to help clients.” Among those sectors, Lindsay listed:

  • Revitalize applications for increased business flexibility;
  • Empowering people to boost productivity,
  • Unifying teams to maximize business agility; and
  • Exploit infrastructure to increase System z utilization

This approach means IBM addresses service enabling the applications, putting Web 2.0 front ends on mainframe resources, or even creating business intelligence repositories to help clients make better decisions about their application portfolio.  The System z program also extends through the whole lifecycle, Lindsey said, including testing, architecture, design and all areas that will walk about how customers can quickly and cost-effectively improve their application portfolio.

Scott Searle, Program Director for IBM Rational’s Enterprise Modernization, said Innovate 2010’s debut System z track will provide a 16-session track that presents unprecedented opportunities to network with IBM engineers and customers on latest tools and technologies to promote innovate applications for System z, as well as allow Eclipse, Java and .NET developers to collaborate on System z projects

Innovate 2010’s program addresses all professionals that have a System z, Searle added.  For customer executives, IBM will present an executive summit special for System z, where they can meet one-on-one with IBM executives for input. For System z hands-on professionals, Searle added, IBM will offer a solutions-centric “SystemZ Sandbox,” which offers 20 solution scenarios and are open to any coding professionals looking for quicker ways to deliver System z solutions to their company. IBM will also have a mainframe and Rational products operating in the solution center, he added.

Innovate 2010’s dedicated agenda for System z Enterprise Modernization includes:

  • Reduce costs, complexity for on-going operations and maintenance with System z solution scenarios, EGL, Rational collaboration tools
  • System z Best Practices, Case Studies Enterprise Modernization projects (cross-department, Web 2.0 portals, etc.)
  • Ask IBM Experts -- Meet up close with execs, tech leads, product mangers, partners etc.
  • Up close with System z Go hands-on with latest System z software, tools -- labs, workshops, etc.
  • Revitalize your System z asset portfolio, at lower cost and risk than you think
  • Update your System z skills, not just your technology

IBM will show the new IDEs and high-level languages, including an Eclipse-based IDE for C/C++ developers new release of Rational Developer for System z (RDz) and Rational Team Consort, designed to help Java, .NET, web and System z developers to collaborate with each other across a unified single-team infrastructure.
