IBM Fellow Reviews 'Private Cloud' Benefits at Impact 2010

A co-creator of IBM's cloud initiatives says private cloud is reaping big and measurable benefits for customers. Jerry Cuomo, CTO of IBM WebSphere and an IBM Fellow now working on cloud, will detail 6 ways private clouds solving big pain points for customers at Impact 2010 May 2-7 in Las Vegas, Nev.

jerry2009-largeOne of the co-founders of IBM’s cloud initiatives says that today’s practical solutions largely are driven by private cloud options.

“Private clouds are well within the appetite of our customers,” Jerry Cuomo, CTO of IBM WebSphere and an IBM Fellow.  “And, why is that so?  Well largely because they [customers] have a set of practical issues they want to solve within their enterprise.”

Many of those issues and pain points are long-standing ones that have to do with the efficiencies of IT resources and personnel, and the ability of both to driven more business-directed results, Cuomo added.

Among them:

  • Reduce Long Lead Times for Projects
  • Maximize IT Skills (target on what they’re good at)
  • Avoid Hardware Sprawl
  • Reduce Complexity
  • Let Business Focus on Core Competencies
  • Reduce IT Costs (CapEX, OpEx)

At Impact 2010, IBM’s SOA and BPM conference in Las Vegas May 2-7, Cuomo will be among a huge number of connectivity and cloud experts from IBM that will discuss how Big Blue is working with customers to drive real results, and not exploration from cloud efforts.

“At Impact this year, we really want to focus on how customers can establish shared environments to solve a wide range of problems,” Cuomo told IDN.  The key to problem-solving in the cloud is simplicity and control, and at Impact IBM will explore both in great depth with its WebSphere CloudBurst Appliance and WebSphere Hypervisor Edition.

Cuomo introduced the WebSphere CloudBurst Appliance at last year’s impact as a simple-to-use yet powerful “coke machine,” where the hardware/firmware factor can simply “dispense a set of cans, or cartridges.”  The benefits of the approach can be remarkable.  “With CloudBurst, we can help automate the provisioning of [a customer’s] WebSphere-based middleware environment in a virtualized form.  This approach, Cuomo added, “provides customers instant value.”

As one example, Cuomo described how IBM internal engineers used WebSphere CloudBurst Appliance to build a test cloud for WebSphere version 7, and saved significant time in testing because the IT team wasn’t forced to “chase demons,” that can often appear while provisioning testing resources.  “There’s no more installing. There is just copying,” Cuomo said.

That’s just one approach to cloud on the Impact 2010 agenda.  IBM engineers, product leads and customers will participate in discussions, labs and 1-on-1s on various practical approaches on the WebSphere CloudBurst Appliance, as well as other topics related to public-private-hybrid clouds, as well as a powerful new set of technologies for WebSphere eXtreme Scale aimed at helping customers be more efficient and performant with high-value applications, such as transaction processing and customer-based portals, Cuomo said.
