BPM in the cloud gets a running start for the New Year as Pegasystems Inc. is adding more automation and efficiency to its BPM in the cloud offering to cut complexity and cost for provisioning, deployment and installation cloud-based BPM.  Improvements arise from Pegasystems’ December upgrades to its SmartPaaS Instance Manager and Smart PaaS Instant Edition.

Pegasystems’ SmartPaaS (Platform as a Service) offering for cloud-based BPM offers customers a secure, fault tolerant, high performance cloud environment to run their BPM applications off-premise.  SmartPaaS comes with these features:

  • VPN connectivity to the company’s IT operations / data center to facilitate integration and single sign on.
  • Pegasystems’ SmartBPM software suite, which includes process engine, process analyzer, case management, integration with enterprise assets (including support for multiple document and content repositories) and a presentation layer that supports thin clients or existing portals.
  • Service options that allows customers to choose a fully managed or self-managed option
  • Monthly subscription pricing

Customers, partners and BPM Centers of Excellence can use SmartPaaS Instance Manager to secure, high performance environments on Amazon Web Services, a Pegasystems official said.

“SmartPaaS is a disruptive offering that has proven to be a practical solution for our pragmatic customers. SmartPaaS is the first complete Platform-as-a-Service for enterprise applications, and we are extremely pleased with the rapid uptake by our customers,” said Douglas Kim, Managing Director, Platform as a Service at Pegasystems, in a statement.

Further, because the Pegasystems’ SmartPaaS Instant Edition provides a secure, high performance cloud environment, customers will be able to replicate all development between the cloud and in-house systems, Kim added.

Meeting Customer Requirements for BPM in the Cloud
Pegasystems’ optimized its SmartBPM Suite for the Smart PaaS cloud platform to meet several key customer requirements for BPM in the cloud, according to the company’s statement.  Among them:

  • To enable users to implement projects 5x faster and at 1/5 the cost of traditional means;
  • To protect customers’ data centers against network attacks with secure data encryption technology;
  • To ease integration with existing back-end systems, and identity management;
  • To supply a 100% web-based environment to simplify access to all BPM in the cloud resources.  The full SmartPaaS BPM development and test suite are on the cloud
  • To offer customers 100% portability for applications developed and deployed on SmartPaaS between cloud and on-premise systems.

One early adopter, who faced limited budget and staff resources,  said Pegasystems’ BPM in the cloud approach was crucial to getting the project launched, funded and developed.  “We had an urgent time to market need for our new [Pega] initiative, SmartPaaS helped us start the project almost immediately with no capital expense, while being instantly accessible by both multiple teams across different time zones,” said Jo Hoppe, CIO of Paraxel International Corp., in the statement.
