Discount Tire, an independent tire and wheel retailer, is using Red Hat Network Satellite to bring more visibility and performance to Linux systems running mission-critical internal and e-commerce systems. Discount Tire says even their IT staff productivity has also improved.
In 2000, Discount Tire decided to bring the management of its e-commerce infrastructure in-house. It had been outsourced for several years.
Originally the IT team tried to build a Windows based e-commerce system, but it didn't meet Discount Tire's performance, reliability and stability needs, the company said. In addition, the company said it could not get its IBM Lotus Domino Server to run reliably on Windows - which became a key decision factor, as Lotus downtime severely affected the company's daily operations.
"Our e-commerce environment has to be available 24/7/365 at 99.99 percent availability, making it absolutely mission-critical. Our internal applications [running Linux] include inventory management and email. We have been able to trust Red Hat explicitly that everything will just work," said Will Darton, Discount Tire's senior server support admin in a statement.
Discount Tire uses Red Hat Network Satellite to manage, manage, administer and monitor its 50 Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers. Ease of use, visibility and scalability of the solution were key to Discount Tire, officials said.
As a core management offering for open source infrastructures, Red Hat Network provides administrators with the tools to efficiently manage their systems lowering per-system, deployment, and management costs. It also provides IT managers and sysadmins a single centralized tool, which can secure connection policies for remote administration, and secure content.
