Survey: Gartner Says IT Spending Continues to Grow in 2008 
IT spending continues to grow despite the weak economy, according to a Gartner Inc. survey of IT executives released at Gartner's Outsourcing & IT Services Summit 2008 in London. Top-line IT growth is being driven by interest in SOA, SaaS and Web 2.0.
IT spending continues to grow despite the weak economy, according to a Gartner Inc. survey of IT executives released at Gartner's Outsourcing & IT Services Summit 2008 in London. Top-line IT growth is being driven by interest in SOA, SaaS and Web 2.0.
Chief executives are being called on to do more than manage the business, Gartner found. Notably, CIOs are also being asked to keep up with the latest IT trends including Web 2.0, SOA (Services-oriented Architecture), and even SaaS (Software as a Service).
Respondents to the survey also noted increased interest in: business process utility, infrastructure utility, remote-management services and cloud computing.
Another notable trend: Business IT managers are moving away from outsourcing their IT departments, according to Gartner. The survey found almost 30% of respondents -- twice as many as last year - said they're thinking about bringing some previously-outsourced IT functions back in-house.

IT Providers - A Different Trend
Meanwhile, those companies that provide IT technologies and services to end users say they will spend more on outsourcing. The survey found more than half of the IT companies (55%) surveyed by Gartner said their companies will spend more on outside service providers in 2008. Only 10% of firms said they plan to cut spending on outsourcers,
According to Gartner, large IT providers, such as Microsoft Corp. and Google Inc., are leading the way in IT investments.
